Sea Ray 500 Sundancer

This is the second Sea Ray we’ve outfitted for this owner. While the 500 is one of the most factory equipped boats, it needed a bigger sound on the cockpit and a cockpit LCD TV.

COCKPIT LCD

The port side pilar provided the optimum location for this 20-inch LCD TV by giving the greatest number of cockpit occupants an obstructed view.

We used a Sharpvision Aquos for the best and brightest picture.

The cockpit LCD can access terestrial broadcasts, satellite TV wether in the boathouse or out on the water via a KVH TracVision, plus the salon DVD.

A custom-built aluminum LCD bracket is powder-coated in ‘white’. The DC power and coaxil cables are routed through the center of the mount.

A quick-release bracket allows EZ removal and reinstallation. No tools are required.

The LCD’s AC-to-DC power supply is remote mounted and concealed behind the sink console.

Just over the LCD mount we installed a sunlight-resistant infrared target. The target delivers remote control commands to the satellite TV receiver and DVD player found in the salon.

Within the salon infrared emitters are located over the SAT TV receiver and DVD player.

The best part of the cockpit LCD TV may be the fact that the SAT TV and DVD theater sound is supported by eight full-range speakers, dual subwoofers and mega power.

COCKPIT AUDIO

The cockpit audio system begins with the AM/FM/CD receiver and six-disc changer concealed in a salon cabinet. An auxiliary input accepts video soundtracks.

The helm features a digital display remote control and we added a second digital remote control at the transom.

Concealed behind a couch in the cabin, twelve channels of amplification drive the cockpit audio system. The system will play loud and clean while the amplifiers operate conservatively.

The EQ outputs six discrete channels times 7-volts per channel allowing a low noise floor and serious dynamic range.

An important ingredient in achieving a great sounding system is the way we set the electronic crossovers and gain levels. Open-air acoustics are considerably different from enclosed cabins.

To power the system we obtained the DC supply direct from the engine compartment via heavy gauge cables. A 200 amp DC breaker is connected to the house bank.

We upgraded the coaxils at the helm to MB Quart oversized marine integral speakers. An internal speaker features component quality drivers mounted in a coaxil fashion but with an outboard crossover network.

With the sprawling cockpit of the 500 Dancer we doubled up on the overhead hardtop speakers. The different mounting angles disperse the sound to the very back of the deck and with uniform distribution across the cockpit.

A 10-inch subwoofer at the front of the cockpit.

At the rear of the cockpit we installed a second downfiring 10-inch subwoofer concealed in the corner of the seating group.

The polyurethane enclosure is totally waterproof. Aluminum bracketry, polymer risers and stainless steel hardware mount and elevate the enclosure off the deck at the precise distance.

A stainless steel watertight gland provides cable passage through the deck.

Two downward louvered vents allow the bass radiation to freely flow from under the seating console.

Dual subwoofers deliver even bass output across the cockpit deck and yield a seamless integration with the full-range speakers.

We installed Boston Acoustics Voyager speakers recessed up into the hardtop.

The purpose of these speakers is to project out away from the boat and over the swim deck to those rafting behind the boat or those relaxing in the slip.

We also equipped the bow deck with rail-mounted speakers.

Quick-release clamshell brackets and watertight deck plugs make removal and re-installation a breeze.

These Boston Acoustics Voyagers are waterproof and can be left out year around.

Given the fact that this Sundancer is equipped with cockpit air conditioning the external audio/video system will get lots of use. Plus, the 500 Dancer has an expansive cockpit that will seat and entertain a very large group.
