CABIN AUDIO/VIDEO SYSTEM

A DVD player with a shock prevention buffer is installed in the cabinet below the galley/salon TV. This unit is fully controllable while concealed behind the rolling cabinet door.

At the top of the TV/VHS combo set is an infrared target. The DVD player output is distributed to all TV sets.

Shown here is a second infrared target in the forward stateroom. The captain can watch and control the DVD player from behind the closed stateroom pocket door. The system can also be shut off or turned on without getting up.

The DVD audio output is channeled into the factory stereo system. The AM/FM/CD player fader controls from interior to exterior allowing the two distinct systems to be individually zoned in or out.

A hardwire digital remote was installed directly over the salon couch so that the five speaker salon audio entertainment system can be comfortably controlled without getting up or having to open up the cabinet.

An 8-inch down-firing subwoofer is concealed under the starboard couch, a pair of Boston Acoustics 6 1/2-inch coaxials flush in the ceiling plus a pair of Canton miniature 2-way enclosures make up the salon five speaker system. The grills covering the coaxials have been re-covered with an acoustically transparent cloth.

The Canton enclosures and grills have been custom dyed to better integrate with the cabin interior.

Shown is an Alpine five-channel amplifier that powers the salon speaker system. Just below the Alpine amplifier and behind the AC/DC service panel is a small factory amplifier, which is now dedicated to two coaxials in the stateroom.
Hidden behind a cabinet door within the stateroom is a stereo volume control specifically to provide local control over the stateroom speakers. This ten-step attenuator switches to full off if needed.
Hidden in a closet close to the stereo at the aft end of the salon, we added a five-band equalizer. The primary purpose of this equalizer is to provide full and individual zone control over the various speaker components of the external system. A master volume control strictly affects the external system. The fader provides individual boost or cut control over the two radar arch directional enclosure speakers and the six flushmount component speakers distributed between the helm and aft deck. A dedicated subwoofer control commands the output of three 10-inch subwoofers. If relaxing or entertaining on the slip behind the boat, the radar arch speakers can project outward. This might also apply to projecting out over the swim deck or bow when the boat is at anchor since the speakers are adjustable to either direction. The separate zone control may also be convenient in selectively turning down the exterior flushmount speakers when people wish to converse on the aft deck without talking over the music.

A digital remote at the transom is located just above the swim deck, which provides convenient access from the aft deck, water or slip.
Three amplifiers operate the external audio system. A four-channel Alpine operates two-channel bridged, high-pass and drives the 8-ohm arch speakers. The Clarion operates three-channel low-pass into three subwoofers. The JL Audio two-channel amplifier was selected for its unique ability to drive three pair of 4-ohm components in parallel. A very large gauge power service was run directly to the house battery to supply the multiple amplifiers. When the couch cushion is installed, there is no visible trace of amplifiers.

The SpeakerCraft enclosures feature dual 5 1/4 inch mid-bass drivers and a polycarbonate W-dome tweeter per each side. These are monsters and are reserved for large boats with tall arches. This model plays loud, is particularly linear and projects quite a distance.
The backside of the SpeakerCraft shows the adjustable brackets and locking system.
A bridge was inserted in the center of the arch opening to support the considerable weight of the SpeakerCraft enclosures.
Upper and lower Clarion components on the port side. The tweeters are angled to reach separate areas and provide even dispersion.

This system looks like original equipment. Once assembled, there was not much to visually stand out. But with a pair of arch enclosures containing six drivers, three pair of separate component speakers, triple subs and 1000 watts of power, just on the outside system, few systems will compete in volume and range. Add another five speakers in the salon, two in the stateroom and a conservative 300 total watts inside. Volume can be selectively controlled from six different locations on the boat with four distinct zones. Virtually every listening situation and convenience is covered.
