Earmark built this demonstrator for the owner
of Waterski Boats of Dallas. The concept was predicated on a
sleeker and more streamlined tower installation with less exposed
wiring and less bulk.
The factory Kenwood source unit fades from cockpit and bow
speakers (front) to tower speakers (rear). To the right of
the source unit and just under the DC plug, we installed a
bass level control.
Within the port locker
and behind the observer seat, two Boston Acoustics four-channel
amplifiers are mounted on a vinyl-clad amplifier panel. The
panel immediately conceals all amplifier wiring. Six tower speakers
represent a low 1.33-ohm load. Boston amplifiers are unique
in their 1-ohm stereo stability. Boston amplifiers are also
fan-cooled for superior thermal stability. Load impedances range
from 1.33 ohms to 4 ohms and are equally distributed between
the two amplifier’s power supplies.
Shown in the open bow, Polk MOMO integral component speakers
feature coaxially mounted tweeters with outboard crossover networks.
The crossover networks are mounted behind the speakers on birch
mounting pads in order to eliminate vibration-induced problems.
Four Polk MOMO speakers are in the cockpit. The Polks are
equipped with adjustable-angle tweeters. Plus, a full 1-inch
voice coil drives the Polk MOMO tweeters. These speakers sound
fantastic! They look great too.
Under
the driver’s console a Polk MOMO 12-inch subwoofer is dressed
with a black-powdercoated aluminum grill. The tribal flame
design is in concert with the overhead tower tribal wing.
The subwoofer is recessed
behind an acrylic LED light ring. Plus, the subwoofer enclosure
and carpeted facade is elevated off the deck in order to leave
in place all of the original leg room.
Six chrome pods are
mounted to the tower via a single tribal wing and just two collars.
The tribal wing and collars are powdercoated black to match
the tower. The tribal wing also conceals the speaker and lighting
wires with only two short looms exposed from wing to tower.
Unquestionably this is the cleanest and most streamlined tower
installation available. Ultra-bright LED lights and acrylic
diffuser rings are placed behind each of the six Polk MOMO tower
speakers.
Eight chrome halogen
lamps, four front-facing and four rear-facing, adorn the tower
without the bulk of bars and collars. We welded the brackets
directly to the tower before powdercoating. Again, this follows
a scheme that provides a sleeker appearance.
Under
the hinged rear-facing cushion a concealed DVD player delivers
audio to the changer input on the Kenwood source unit. Does
this constitute 12.1 theater? Sure.
An infrared target
allows control of the concealed DVD player.
A
concealed DC to AC inverter powers a Sharpvision 20-inch LCD.
A quick-release bracket and quick-disconnects allow EZ removal
and installation of the LCD. Once removed there is virtually
zero evidence of the LCD provision. The custom LCD bracket was
fabricated out of aluminum and powdercoated to match the tower.
Nightlights
around the tower speakers and subwoofer.
Earmark also provides remote-controlled light packages for your
slip or boathouse.
Later we added a few upgrades for the owner of this Supra.
We changed out the source unit to a dedicated marine FM/AM/CD player that is easier to operate and read.
The transom remote control was upgraded to a digital display model.
A Boston Acoustics two-channel amplifier was added to drive only the tower speakers. The existing dual four-channel amplifiers were reconfigured to drive the in-boat speakers and deliver extra power.
A seventh pair of Polk MOMOs were added to the pass-thru between the helm concoles. The speakers are recessed in white vinyl clad birch bolsters which are trimmed in matching blue piping.
Seven pieces of blue powdercoated aluminum trim were added. These custom accents plus the following three light bezels really brightened up the interior.
A blue acrylic trim ring shadows the subwoofer grill.
The three factory white step lights get replaced with blue 5 LED fixtures concealed in blue powdercoated knurled aluminum bezels.
On-board battery charger and relocated courtesy light in locker.
The Supra ‘S’ transom engine compartment vents were transformed into fiery taillights.
iPod mount and wiring added under helm.
Under the swim platform six waterproof LED fixtures each containing six ultra-bright diodes, illuminate the water around the transom.
