Beginning with 2004, many mobile electronics manufacturers will adopt a new power specification standard. The new voluntary standard, known as CEA-2006, provides a uniform method for rating an amplifier’s true RMS power.

Parameters are:

• At 1 Percent Total Harmonic Distortion and Noise
• Continuous Power Over a 20 Hz to 20KHz Bandwidth

The CEA-2006 standard will allow shoppers to compare the power of in-dash CD receivers on an equal basis for the first time. Gone will be the four times 50 watt in-dash receiver ratings which sporting a five amp fuse.

Not all manufacturers will choose to conform to the CEA-2006 standard. But shoppers will know that if they don’t see the CEA-2006 logo that the specs are probably not trustworthy.
